Man charged with murder of 3-year-old Carlos Nava in East Oakland Monday

A man has been arrested and charged with the murder of 3-year-old Carlos Nava in East Oakland on Monday, Oakland police and prosecutors announced Thursday.

Lawrence Denard, 26, has been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Nava was shot at about 1:10 p.m. near International Boulevard and 65th Avenue. Two men were also shot but survived.

Police said it appears the men were the intended targets and that Nava, who was in the area shopping with his family, was hit by accident.

“The brazen and senseless violence that took the life of an innocent 3-year-old has devastated a family and stunned our community,” District Attorney Nancy O'Malley said in a statement.

Police are holding news conference this afternoon to release more details on the case.

People who want to make contributions should send them to the Carlitos Nava Fund at Wells Fargo's San Leandro Marina branch. The account number is 3981855954.
