Man assaults another man with a hatchet in the Mission

A man was assaulted with a hatchet in the Mission on Saturday, police said Monday.

The 45-year-old was talking to a friend in the area of Caledonia and 16th streets about 11:10 p.m. when a man who appeared to be in his late 30s attacked him with a hatchet, police said.

The attacker reportedly struck the man in the side of his head and then fled.

The victim sustained minor injuries and refused treatment.

He told police the attack was unprovoked.
