Man arrested in connection with Tenderloin drive-by

A 24-year-old San Francisco man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of killing an Oakland man in the Tenderloin earlier this month, police said.

Murad Zawaideh was booked into County Jail on a murder charge in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed 30-year-old Ramone Cruz on May 9.

Zawaideh is in custody with bail set at about $10 million, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

His arraignment has not been scheduled, but Zawaideh is expected to appear in court this week, said spokeswoman Tamara Barak Aparton of the Public Defender's Office, which is representing Zawaideh.

Zawaideh was arrested near Larkin and O’Farrell streets at 9:51 p.m. Sunday when police saw him in a gold sedan. He was wanted for a probation violation, but was booked for murder after he was interviewed by a homicide sergeant, Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

“We all knew to keep an eye out for this guy,” Gatpandan said. “We were trying to find him.”

Cruz was shot in the chest in the 500 block of Larkin Street by someone in a late-model SUV, several blocks from where Zawaideh was arrested.
