Lobbying suit filed against ex-official

City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a lawsuit Wednesday against a former member of the Board of Supervisors alleging 70 violations of the local lobbying ordinance based on contacts made with board members, their aides and emails.

The lawsuit against well-known political figure Michael Yaki says he failed to register as a lobbyist and properly report his payments and contacts. It also alleges that Yaki was working on behalf of Rescue Air Systems Inc. for a year to try to stop the board from eliminating a tall-building regulation requiring installation of a “firefighter air replenishment system.” The San Carlos-based company is the sole manufacturer of the systems. The board eliminated the requirement in October.

Yaki, an ally of former Mayor Willie Brown, serves on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and has his own consulting firm. The City’s lobbying ordinance requires registration and regular reporting of payment and contacts if a person receives or is promised at least $3,000 within three consecutive months and makes contact with city government officials.
