A 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter lifted Riordan to a 61-52 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral in the quarterfinals of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs. With the win, Riordan (16-9) advances to face top-seeded Mitty in the semifinals, scheduled for Friday at St. Ignatius.
Host Riordan trailed 42-39 at with 6 minutes, 41 seconds remaining when Brian Miguel hit the first of his three fourth quarter 3-pointers, tying the game. One minute later, after a layup and jumper by Jorge Camacho, plus a Sacred Heart illegal substitution technical foul, the Crusaders held a 51-39 lead.
“This is the hardest-working team I’ve ever coached,” Riordan coach Rich Buckner said. “This win is a testament to their fortitude.”
Crusaders center Jorge Camacho led all scorers with 24 points, but it was Miguel’s 11 in the final period that led Riordan’s fourth-quarter surge. For the game, Miguel had 14 points and four 3-pointers.
“[Daniel] Cannon and Camacho run the offense,” said Miguel. “I’m a role player, a shooter.”
“It’s about confidence,” Miguel continued. “You miss one, you’ve got to keep shooting.”
Cannon, who had only three points, dished out 11 assists, while Camacho rounded out his game with 11 rebounds. Jerry Brown had 11 points to lead the Irish (16-11).

Marcus Wells made all seven of his shots from the field, swished two 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 21 points.
But with the game on the line, it was two crisp passes the senior fed to Matt Wittlin that made the difference as the No. 4 Tigers (19-7) knocked off the fifth-seeded Blues (13-13) to advance to the semifinals of the Bay Counties League West tournament.
Urban had cut a double-digit deficit down to 42-37 with less than six minutes to play when Wells found Wittlin for a layup. After a stop, the point guard flipped a pass to Wittlin in the left corner, and the sophomore buried a 3-pointer to put Lick back up by 10 with 3:50 remaining.
The Tigers held on from there, with Urban’s Aaron Chew hitting a 3-pointer at thebuzzer to provide the final margin.
Lick now advances to the semifinals and will face top-seeded University Thursday at 5 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion.
“I have a lot of faith in all the guys to step up and make the big shot,” Wells said. “So I have no problem giving it up.”
Anders Eddy had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Urban.

Cecilia Furlong is starting to get that familiar feeling, and that means basketball season could stretch a while longer for the Red Devils.
The senior scored 19 points —including two free throws with five seconds left to put the game on ice — as University (10-16) earned a road win in the first round of the BCL West playoffs. Last season, University carried a 12-13 record into the postseason before reeling off five straight victories, claiming the conference tournament and advancing all the way to the North Coast Section Division V semifinal.
The Red Devils now face top-seeded Urban (17-8) Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion in an interesting semifinal game. University knocked the Blues out of both the BCL and NCS playoffs a year ago, with each win coming by one point.
“It does feel kind of similar,” Furlong said. “We don’t want to give up.”
Cameron Ruby also had 19 for the Red Devils, with nine coming in an 11-2 fourth-quarter run that put the team ahead 46-40 in the final two minutes. Misha Hurd had 18 to lead Lick-Wilmerding (13-13).
