Jogger fatally struck by Golden Gate Transit bus in SF

A jogger was struck and killed by a Golden Gate Transit bus on Van Ness Avenue on Thursday morning, police said.

The collision was reported about 6:15 a.m. at Van Ness Avenue and Lombard Street, Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The jogger, identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Lori Helmer, 51, of San Francisco, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later, Shyy said.

The vehicle involved in the collision was a Golden Gate Transit bus, according to transit agency spokeswoman Priya Clemens.

The bus was turning left from Lombard onto Van Ness when it struck the jogger, Clemens said.

“All of our hearts at Golden Gate Transit go out to the woman’s family,” Clemens said. “We are cooperating fully with the police to aid their investigation and understand exactly what happened.”

She added that the bus driver is “obviously shaken up” and that he is one of the agency’s “most senior drivers with an excellent safety record.”

The collision remains under investigation and the jogger’s name was not released.

The last fatality involving a Golden Gate Transit bus was in 2002 when a vehicle crashed into the back of a bus.
