Inmate tries to escape County Jail on New Year’s Eve

An inmate in San Francisco County Jail reportedly tried to escape his cell on New Year's Eve, the Sheriff's Office said Monday.

Johnny Fannin, 39, of San Francisco, who is in jail on multiple burglary and robbery charges, was being returned to a holding cell about 1:35 p.m. after meeting with his attorney, the Sheriff's Office said. After a deputy brought Fannin to the holding cell and took off his hand-cuffs, Fannin pushed the deputy backward and tried to escape, the Sheriff's Office said. The deputy was able to grab Fannin, and with the assistance of other deputies, Fannin was restrained.

Fannin was then booked additional charges related to his escape attempt and resisting an officer.
