George Lucas team committed to meeting Presidio requests on museum proposal

Too big. Too tall. Wrong design.

That was the message sent Thursday by the Presidio's governing body to “Star Wars” overlord George Lucas regarding his plans for a museum within the former military base.

Nonetheless, Lucas spokesman David Perry said the project's team aims to bring a revised plan back to the Presidio Trust in January to “address the questions the Presidio has put forward.”

While the Trust has sent all three proposals for its centerpiece project on Crissy Field back to the drawing board, the most controversial of the three — Lucas' plans to build a Beaux Arts-style museum to house his art collection in the Presidio — was the hardest hit.

“We have significant issues with the proposed building,” noted the Trust.

Specifically, the Trust requested a total redesign of the museum, from its mass and height to its architectural style. No details were given on how the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum will be revised to address the issues presented by the Trust.

“I can't go into specifics, but no one has more experience working with the Trust than the Lucas team,” said Perry. “So we're going to be working through these issues.”

After much speculation, public comment and even some name calling, the Trust made its announcement Thursday, saying it would hold off on any final decision on what will be built at the Crissy Field site just across from the park's Main Post and parade grounds.

The three proposals all had faults the Trust wanted answered.

“The Board would like to officially offer each team an additional opportunity to revise its proposal in response to feedback received from the public, the Board, and others,” the Trust said in a statement.

The Trust had concerns with The Bridge/Sustainability Institute's ability to raise funds to build and maintain its project.

The Presidio Exchange was critiqued for failing to clearly outline what it will do at the site. Specifically, the Trust did not see a focus for the project.

The revisions are due Jan. 3.
