A 37-year-old man’s attempt to retrieve his stolen cellphone near the Academy of Art University on Friday ended badly, police said.

The man had reportedly been riding Muni near Mission and New Montgomery streets about 8:05 p.m. when one of two thieves snatched his phone. The victim gave chase, police said, but the second suspect knocked him down before fleeing with his accomplice.
