Father shoots at men chasing son in Portola

A father pulled out a handgun and opened fire on three men chasing his son in Portola Thursday evening, police said.

The 55-year-old gunman witnessed the three men hasling — and then chasing — his son near Somerset and Wayland streets around 6:24 p.m., Officer Grace Gatpandan said. He told officers that he fired four shots in their direction, but was not arrested because he acted in self-defense.

The father started shooting when he thought he saw one of the men reaching into his waistband, as though the man were carrying a gun.

The men ran away when they were shot at but were not struck. No arrests have been made.
