UPDATE 9 A.M.:

San Francisco emergency officials are reminding residents to always be prepared for an earthquake after a 4.5-magnitude temblor rattled the Bay Area early Thursday morning.

The earthquake with a preliminary 4.5-magnitude struck at about 2:40 a.m. near Berkeley.

The quake could be felt throughout San Francisco and in other parts of the Bay Area.

Following the shaking, San Francisco’s Emergency Operations Center assessed city facilities and infrastructure and determined there were no damages or injuries.

However, emergency officials said 911 call volume increased immediately following the earthquake. Many of the callers were residents asking if an earthquake had occurred. People are being reminded to only call 911 in an emergency and need a police officer, firefighter or ambulance.

“San Francisco is earthquake country and it is always a good idea to take simple steps to prepare for any emergency,” the emergency department said in a statement. “San Franciscans can visit www.sf72.org for simple tips and guides on how they can prepare for any emergency. Free training is also available through the San Francisco Fire Department’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT). For more information on NERT visit http://sf-fire.org/neighborhood-emergency-response-team-nert.”
