Darren Matte sheds light on The Brick Yard

Matte is one of five Marina district residents who own The Brick Yard restaurant and bar that opened last month at 1787 Union St.

Why open another restaurant in the Marina? I’ve lived in the Marina now for six years and I just I think that the demographic here is key for this sort of venue.

Are you worried about the vacant storefronts around you? I don’t think it’s good at all. I think for 18 months, every sixth storefront was vacant. But now, the trend is definitely going in the right direction. I don’t look at it as competition.

When’s happy hour? From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday.

Why is it called The Brick Yard? As we were kind of going through the development and the concept of the place, we uncovered that one of the walls had some brick on it. We thought a nice brick wall will lend itself to a lot of things. So one whole side is brick and we put in skylights.

How would you describe the restaurant? We’re a restaurant that could also be a venue to view your favorite sporting events. If you’ve got a group of friends who want to go out on a Friday or grab brunch or watch sports, we’ve got it all.
