City arts donation fund celebrates 25th year

A program that allows city residents to tack on a little extra to their property taxes in order to donate money to the arts turned 25 this year.

The Voluntary Arts Contribution Fund was created in 1984 by the Board of Supervisors. Since then it has collected modest donations – the average is $58 – from city residents and doled them out to nonprofit arts organizations based in San Francisco with budgets of less than $1 million.

Recipients of 2009 VACF awards include 35 organizations in theater, dance, film, music, literature, and visual arts. Together these groups will receive $122,830 for a variety of projects ranging from installing fire alarms to improving venue accessibility for disabled patrons to buying new stage lights.

The City covers the administrative costs of the program, which is administered by Grants for the Arts.
