Burlingame rug thief gets 32 months in prison

An Oakland man pleaded no contest this week to stealing more than $230,000 worth of rugs from a rug store in Burlingame earlier this year, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

John Reed, 56, entered the plea Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Clifford Cretan in exchange for a sentence of 32 months in prison. The judge sentenced him on Tuesday as well.

Heriz Rugs at 218 California St. was burglarized at 11:45 p.m. on July 30. The theft of 16 rugs worth $230,184 was discovered by the store owner the next morning.

Reed called a former rug store owner in San Francisco on Aug. 2 and offered to sell her rugs, driving her to his home with 10 rugs in his
car, prosecutors said. She bought two rugs for $850.

But when he called her later to tell her to watch out for stolen rugs, she became suspicious and called the police. When investigators caught up with him the next day, he still had eight stolen rugs in the car, prosecutors said.

Reed is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 12 for a restitution hearing.
