Brawlers wield knife, broomstick in Mission district on Saturday

A woman was stabbed in the ribcage and a man struck in the head with a broom handle Saturday night in a Mission district brawl, police said.

The corner of 16th and Mission streets was a“chaotic scene” at 8:17 p.m. when police arrived. The injured 23-year-old woman pointed officers to the nearby Mario Morales, 51, who was armed with a knife and bleeding from the face, Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

Both the woman and Morales were transported to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Morales claims that he was attacked by a group of nine. But witnesses told police that Morales was the aggressor in a fight that involved the woman, a Hispanic male armed with the broomstick and two black males aged 18 to 20.

Morales was booked into County Jail on attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
