Bomb squad blows up pipe from I-580

A blue metal pipe wrapped in tape leaking a silver substance that was found in the median of westbound Interstate Highway 580 in Livermore this afternoon triggered a police, fire and bomb squad investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.

California Department of Transportation crews working on the highway located the pipe just west of Portola Avenue shortly after noon and alerted multiple agencies to the suspicious object, CHP Officer Mike Herman

said.

Alameda County sheriff's bomb squad officials donned in hazardous suits investigated the item while police shut down all eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 580 in the area, according to Herman.

The pipe was cleared from the scene by 12:45 p.m. and detonated away from the roadway by bomb squad officials, Herman said.

“In cases like that you don't take chances,” Herman said. “It could have been something, then again it could have been something totally unhazardous.”

Upon discovery of a suspicious item, bomb squad officials will either move the object mechanically, “or if they figure it's bad enough they'll blow it up right there on the spot,” Herman said.

In today's case, the pipe was determined safe to remove, allowing officials to detonate the pipe away from where it was found, Herman added.
