Bomb scare prompts evacuation at S.F. General

One of San Francisco General Hospital’s buildings was evacuated Wednesday evening after a suspicious device resembling a pipe bomb was found before 4 p.m.

Building 90, at 887 Potrero Ave., was evacuated after a call came in about a suspicious package, said Sgt. Neville Gittens of the San Francisco police, who added that the device appeared to be a pipe bomb.

The discovery prompted the closure of Potrero Avenue between 20th and 22nd streets. Nearby residents were asked to stay indoors.

By early Wednesday evening, the device was rendered safe by a bomb squad, Sgt. Gittens said.

Other buildings on the hospital’s campus had not been evacuated due to the threat, according to a hospital dispatcher.
