Man critically injured after lighting self on fire at UC Berkeley

Several bystanders attempted to help the burning man before officers and Berkeley Fire Department units arrived at the scene and secured the area.

The man – whose name was not released – was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. At least one bystander who attempted to help the man was also injured and was treated for minor injuries.

The UCPD noted Berkeley Mental Health services were called to the scene to offer aid to the critically injured man, though no further details on the man or events leading up to the fire were immediately available.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the UCPD at 510 642-6760
