Bay Area Holiday Angels: John Beatty

What He Did: On the morning of Nov. 27, John Beatty was making his daily commute south on the Golden Gate Bridge when he noticed that a Jeep Grand Cherokee in front of him was driving significantly slower. After driving up beside the vehicle, Beatty saw that the woman behind the wheel was unconscious. Acting quickly, Beatty pulled his truck up along the automobile, then, nudging it slowly with his front bumper, directed it back to the right hand side of the bridge, away from the active traffic.

Why he did it: “There were cars screeching to a stop behind me,” Beatty. “I knew my truck was capable of steering the Jeep, and if I didn’t do something real quickly, something bad was going to happen.”

The impact: Unfortunately, the 62-year-old woman passed away, but Beatty assured that no other deaths or injuries occurred on the bridge that day. “By jumping into action he helped avert what could have been a catastrophic situation.” Golden Gate Bridge spokeswoman Mary Currie said.
