A week after the Metropolitan Transportation Commission approved a $20 million allocation for the Oakland Airport Connector project, BART’s Board of Directors amended a contract Thursday so that the agency can actually receive the money.
Although the MTC gave preliminary approval to the $20 million allocation, the California Transportation Commission, a state body, still needs to give the final OK before BART can get its hands on the cash.
The CTC isn’t scheduled to meet — and thus can’t vote on the matter — until Sept. 22, which was a problem, since two major bid contracts for the $484 million project were set to expire on Sept. 21. BART previously stated that they wouldn’t go forward with the project unless it received the $20 million from the CTC, so the scheduling glitch actually put the project in peril.
Thursday, BART’s Board of Directors addressed those needs by voting to tweak the language of the bid so that they wouldn’t expire on Sept. 21, thereby allowing the CTC to vote on the $20 million allocation. BART’s motion was approved 8-1.
