A swan song for the ‘Stick

Once merely a fan of the 49ers, David “Heat” Canales now gets stopped by strangers when he attends games thanks to the popularity of one of his songs.

“Two years ago, I’d go to games, just like everybody else,” Canales said. “Now I walk through the parking lot and I hear ‘Die-Hard.’ A kid asked me for an autograph earlier this season; I didn’t even know how [to sign an autograph]. I had to make one up.”

Canales now has a new song about his favorite football team, “Home (Farewell to Candlestick),” which pays tribute to the stadium where his 49ers fandom was solidified.

“We know it’s old / we know it’s cold / but this is Candlestick and we call it home,” he raps, in a nod to what he will most miss about the Stick: the weather.

“I grew up in the Sunset, so I’m used to the fog,” Canales said. “I know in Santa Clara, I’ll be cooking out there.”

A 49ers fan since childhood, Canales has been attending games at Candlestick for more than 25 years. “Home” is his second tribute to the team. His first, “Die-Hard,” came out last season and attracted attention when local radio station KYLD (94.9 FM) started playing it in between its usual rotation of top-40 hits.

To Canales’ surprise, he received a phone call from 49ers reps who wanted to play the “Die-Hard” video on the big screen during a game.

Since the video for “Home” was posted to YouTube on Dec. 11, it has garnered more than 6,000 views. Canales said he felt it was important to honor Candlestick Park through song so fans like him could “commemorate the emotion of it all.”

Although the move to Santa Clara won’t be easy — “I’m a little wary of what the tech community is going to bring” to the fan base, Canales said — there are some positives. His new tribute has once again caught the attention of the 49ers, whom he said may arrange for him to perform during Monday’s last regular-season game at Candlestick. And with the Warriors trying to build a new arena on The City’s waterfront, there may be other sports-centric songs in Canales’ future.
