‘We’ve excluded lobbyists’ part 51 — Occidental Petroleum lobbyist to DOJ

Karl R. Thompson was a partner at O’Melveny & Myers, where, in 2008 he was a registered lobbyist for Hess and Occidental Petroleum working on Defense bills, according to his firm’s lobbying filings.

Today, Thompson is an appointee in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel. It’s now been about two years since he was last registered to lobby, which frees him from any obligation under Obama’s executive order to recuse himself from Hess, Occidental, oil, or defense-related matters.

Because President Obama said in his State of the Union Address “we’ve excluded lobbyists from policy-making jobs,” I’ve kept a list of lobbyists Obama has named to policy-making jobs. Thompson is number 51.
