Senate Watch: DSCC sets sights on Toomey

Today’s FEC independent expenditure reports show the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee buying $1.6 million in negative ads against former Rep. Pat Toomey, R-Pa. (The money was actually spent in mid-to-late August.) Senate committees don’t usually file this kind of report — they have a different system — so these ones stand out.

This looks like a frantic attempt to move the needle in a race that Toomey has dominated over the last few months. Thee rationale is simple: Democrats will be in a very bad way if they are forced to retreat from the Keystone State. Facing near-guaranteed losses in North Dakota, Indiana and Arkansas, Democrats are trying to keep as much of the map in play for themselves as possible.

Despite the relief the DSCC got this week in Delaware, it might end up costing them some serious money to defeat Christine O’Donnell, now that her campaign has suddenly raised $1.5 million in 48 hours. The Democrats’ Senate ship has also sprung a new leak in Wisconsin. Hopes of pickups in Ohio and Florida are fading or lost, and New Hampshire looks grim after former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte’s victory in the GOP primary.
