Reid to announce public option stance

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is planning an afternoon press conference to reveal whether the Senate health care bill will include a public health insurance option.

Reid has been working for days on how to combine a moderate version of health care reform proposed by the Senate Finance Committee with a much more liberal version put forward by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions panel. The Finance bill proposes privately run health insurance co-operatives while the Senate HELP bill calls for a robust public option. Democratic aides say Reid is likely to go for compromise that would allow the states to “opt out” of a public option. Stay tuned.
