Gibbs: Health care reform? What’s that?

Just now on Meet the Press, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs was asked why Democrats — Joe Manchin was mentioned in particular — are getting shellacked in the polls and appear set to lose in November.

His answer: It’s the economy’s fault. And this is a preview of what you’ll hear on November 3. Democrats are preparing in advance to explain away whatever losses they suffer. Everything was beyond their control. Their upcoming losses (however large or small) have nothing to do with ideological overreach. They are telegraphing in advance that they have learned no lessons from the events of the last two years.

Another significant early answer came when Gibbs brought up the Republican agenda in order to frame the race as a choice between two philosophies:

“They want to start by repealing things like Wall Street reform.”

Remember how Democrats were going to challenge the Republicans on Obamacare — to ask which of its provisions they would like to repeal?

Not any more –  no mention of Obamacare at the top line, not even from the president’s spokesman, appearing on what is arguably the most important Sunday morning platform. It’s a clear sign of just how poisonous that particular piece of legislation has become, as our own Michael Barone writes today.
