Californians making waves

Northern California native Jon Fogarty and his Southern California teammate with the famous last name, Alex Gurney, have become a dominant force in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. With their victory last weekend at Daytona, the dynamic duo has won three consecutive races and four (of eight) on the season.

Not only have they been blitzing the field on race day, they have qualified on the front row in the Bob Stallings/Gainsco Racing Pontiac Riley for all eight events to date, heading into this weekend’s run at the new 1.3-mile Iowa Speedway.

Their hot streak has propelled Fogarty and Gurney into the driver’s title picture. Overcoming a bad start in the season opener in the 24 at Daytona, they have climbed all the way to third with 220 points apiece, trailing only 2004 co-champ and current championship leader Scott Pruett, another Northern Californian, with 237 points and 2005 co-champ Max “the Axe” Angelelli with 233.

The Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series opened Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s 50th anniversary season in May at the U.S. Sports Car Invitational. It will be in Northern California again at Infineon Raceway on Aug. 25.

MotoGP at Indy?: It appears to be a done deal that MotoGP will have a second U.S. race in 2008. A couple of sources have said it just needs to be announced that Indianapolis Motor Speedway will host MotoGP on its infield road course and that announcement may come the week of the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (July 20-22).

The Indy date probably would be in September. A couple of sources also indicated that it would be a three-year contract.

Chasing a legend: When the MotoGP World Championship makes its third annual stop at Laguna Seca on July 20-22, defending series champion Nicky Hayden will be trying to match a legend.

Wayne Rainey of Monterey was victorious three consecutive years at Laguna Seca from 1989-91, when the series was known as the 500cc World Championship. In the limited time the series has run at the world-renowned 2.238-mile, 11-turn circuit, no other rider has been able to accomplish that.

The 500cc World Championship raced at Laguna Seca six times between 1988 and ’94.

KANAAN: I’m SORRY, KINDA

Tony Kanaan said he will apologize to Sam Hornish Jr. this weekend for his part in a fight at Watkins Glen, but didn’t sound contrite. “If I bump into Sam, I won’t go out of my way to apologize to him, but I will apologize for him for the end lap, if that’s what he’s complaining about, although it doesn’t justify everything else that happened,” the IRL driver said.
