Business briefs: Burd leads healthcare group

Safeway (SWY) CEO Steve Burd is leading a new business group, the Coalition to Advance Healthcare Reform, lobbying to bring down the cost of U.S. health care. The coalition supports subsidies to help poor people get coverage and tax deductions to make insurance more affordable. The uninsured drive up costs by delaying preventive care and relying on emergency rooms, Burd said.

A trip to the store is becoming a lot more fashionable as consumers use designer totes to hold their greens and express their style. Hermes, Stella McCartney and Consuelo Castiglioni are among the designers offering reusable shopping bags that are chic — and pricey. Reusable bags have increased in popularity as cities consider banning plastic bags, as San Francisco recently did.
