Business briefs: Airline stocks

U.S. airline stocks dropped as carriers continued to struggle with high fuel prices and maintenance, though AirTran Holdings Inc. (AAI) increased second-quarter profits by cutting costs in other areas. US Airways Group Inc. (LCC) said its second-quarter earnings fell 14 percent, but results topped Wall Street’s expectations and the carrier began recalling furloughed employees.

The 82-year-old media mogul is entangled in a bitter public feud with his children and estranged from practically everyone in his family due to a fight over control of his empire. The legal battle centers on National Amusements Inc., a holding company founded by Redstone’s father that controls the publicly traded CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc.
