Sunset Magazine Goes Slow

Sunset magazine, the venerable 60-year-old journal of Western living, took on the challenge of producing — in a small backyard-sized plot — every single item of food and drink for a summer feast. The menu included creamy corn soup with roasted poblanos; multi-variety tomato salad with fresh white cheese; herbed potato cake; patty pan squash hollowed out and baked with eggs laid by backyard chickens; and melon sorbets — all accompanied by stunning “garage” wines and even beer. The staff at Sunset did venture a short distance off campus to procure grapes for wine, vinegar and olives for olive oil (their olive tree was infested), sea water for salt and milk for cheese, but otherwise they raised everything there. The point is that anyone with access to the smallest patch of earth, or even a deck, can produce a substantial amount of delicious food.
