Sushi in Rohnert Park & OceanFest

Just off U.S. Highway 101 in Rohnert Park, south of Santa Rosa, Hana Japanese Restaurant provides a top-notch culinary stop for lunch or dinner on the road. At 11:30 a.m., when the restaurant opens, every seat at the small sushi bar fills. Those who are late sit at tables in a utilitarian little dining room with wooden blinds that let in light but conceal the parking lot of the Double Tree Plaza. But, the sushi transports. One Saturday at the sushi bar, we nibbled our way through sparkling shimaji, super-fresh if sinewy butterfish, luscious sea urchin roe and buttery hamachi belly, a thrill of pure fat. Chef/owner Ken Tominaga scraped a frozen filet of negitoro (fatty tuna) with the side of a spoon and put the frozen belly “slushy” inside a sushi roll, which released its flavor as the tuna melted on the tongue. Expect to pay around $50 for a luxurious sampling without drinks. Tominaga also started the sushi bar at Go Fish! in St. Helena. 101 Golf Course Drive, Rohnert Park.
