The folks at YouTube kindly have provided the press with information about the 10 most popular videos of 2017, which collectively have logged more than 633 million views, accounting for more than 40 million hours.
With more than 155 million views, the top video is the cheesy “Until we will become dust,” showcasing a performer dressed as an oyster singing the tune in the Thai competition “The Mask Singer.” It turned out to be Panthapol Prasarnratchakij of a band called Cocktail.
(Fox apparently is developing a U.S. version of the Asian celebrity singing game show — there are Korean, Chinese and Thai versions — in which contestants wear elaborate masks and costumes concealing their identity.)
Rounding out the top five most viewed videos are dancers from Kyle Hanagami Choreography performing to Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”; Sheeran’s Carpool Karaoke session from James Corden’s late night show; “Ping Pong Trick Shots” from Dude Perfect; and Darci Lynne Farmer, the 12-year-old singing ventriloquist, getting the golden buzzer on “America’s Got Talent.”
Also in the top 10: Lady Gaga’s well-received Super Bowl halftime show, in which she performed acrobatics and a medley of her hits; the YouTube spoof channel Bad Lip Reading’s riotous take on Donald Trump’s inauguration (with appearances by Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, George H.W. Bush, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi); award-winning video blogger Bill Wurtz’s 19-minute “History of the Entire World, I Guess”; the tender animated short film “In a Heartbeat” by Esteban Bravo and Beth David; and the hilarious spot with professor Robert Kelly, whose adorable tots gatecrashed his BBC News interview about the situation in Korea.
‘DESPACITO’ BREAKS RECORD
YouTube also shared its top music videos: With more than 4.4 billion views, Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” has the top spot, beating Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” which held the record for nearly five years.
Six of the most viewed videos showcase Latin artists. Here’s the rest of the list: Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”; J Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gent,”; Maluma’s “Felices los 4”; Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like”; Chris Jeday’s “Ahora Dice” featuring J. Balvin, Ozuna and Arcángel; Nicky Jam’s “05. El Amante”; Jason Derulo’s “Swalla” (featuring Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign); DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One” featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne; and Enrique Iglesias’ “Subume La Radio” with Descemer Bueno, Zion and Lennox.
