Preventing suicide among young people, veterans and those currently in the military is the topic of a forum slated for North Charleston.
Jackie Garrick, the director of the Pentagon's Suicide Prevention and Risk Reduction Office, is one of the speakers at the event on Friday. State Department of Mental Health director John Magill is also scheduled to speak at the event.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death of Americans between the ages of 10 and 24. And 20 percent of the more-than 30,000 suicides in the nation each year are veterans.
The event is being sponsored by the North Charleston Rotary Club and other groups.
