Longtime Pacifica morning coffee and lunchtime banh mi favorite Vy’s Coffee Shop closed a few weeks ago with little notice, saddening fans across the region.
The new spot, Bunny, has new owners and a new look, with updated flooring and more tables – in contrast to Vy’s congested corner deli feel. Banh mi – Vietnamese sanwiches bargain priced in the $6-$7 range – remain the core of Bunny’s menu. Fillings include barbecue pork, five-spice chicken, lemongrass chicken, tofu or a pork belly-cold cuts combo.
Unlike Vy’s, Bunny’s menu also includes rice noodle bowls, rice plates, spring rolls, Imperial rolls and salads (shrimp or tofu papaya).
Coconut waffles, a beloved dish at Vy’s, also are served at Bunny, as is Vietnamese iced coffee sweetened with condensed milk – the most popular drink any time of day. Also new at Bunny: Credit cards are accepted.

Max’s Restaurant is the newest eatery in Daly City’s Gellert Marketplace. A sign in the dining room proclaims “The House That Fried Chicken Built” lets diners know that this 70-year-old chain based in the Philippines specializes in Filipino fried chicken.
Other staples on the menu include pancit bihon (a surf and turf rice noodle dish); lumpia (fried spring roll appetizers filled with ground pork); kare kare (oxtail stew); and sisig (sizzling pork belly).
Unlike at most Max’s outposts, the Daly City branch offers table service. The dining room features contrasting stone walls and wooden ceiling beams, and picnic-table-like wood banquettes. Max’s only other Peninsula location is in South San Francisco.

The latest Peninsula boba tea café opening is Pop Tea Bar, a block from Palo Alto’s California Avenue. Pop Tea’s menu features black, oolong or green milk teas, fresh milk teas, and fruit teas with fruit or jelly toppings in addition to the mainstay tapioca boba pearls. Freshly brewed coffee drinks also are available.
Pop Tea replaces the short-lived Beans n’ Bites.

Independence Day is just around the corner, time for locals to gather to determine the champion of the 34th annual Chili Cook Off and Summer Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday in Palo Alto’s Mitchell Park. Tasting starts at 1:30 p.m., and admission is free, although there are small fees for chili and ice cream tasting kits.
