TMZ says Joni Mitchell is in a coma, but singer disagrees

Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell was in a coma Tuesday, according to TMZ and a slew of other sources. Until she wasn’t.

“Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma,” read a statement posted to Mitchell’s official website early Tuesday evening. “Joni is still in the hospital — but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected.”

Mitchell has been in the hospital since March 31, when she found unconscious at her Los Angeles home; her official Twitter account reported that she was “awake and in good spirits” later that same day, according to People magazine.

TMZ — which the statement on Mitchell’s website referred to only as “a certain media outlet” — started throwing around the C-word Tuesday after Leslie Morris, Mitchell’s longtime friend, filed a petition to be named conservator for the 71-year-old music icon. Mitchell’s team says the petition merely allows Morris “to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital.”

The SFJAZZ Center had planned to present Mitchell with an SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award at a gala May 8. The SFJAZZ Center had no comment on Tuesday afternoon.

The man accused of swiping Elton John’s heart-shaped glasses is now being held in a jail-shaped building.

Memphis, Tenn.-based TV station WREG reported that alleged pop pilferer Matthew Colvin was apprehended Tuesday on suspicion of stealing the glasses from the Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum on April 21. The pop artifact, which is insured for about $2,000 and thus objectively less valuable than a designer handbag, was recovered Monday after a skittish Colvin reportedly phoned in a tip to police.

Investigators told The Associated Press that Colvin’s fingerprints matched those on the museum’s display case, where the glasses are expected to make their triumphant comeback today.

A representative of Jenner, who prefers to use male pronouns for now, said the photos were taken with a telephoto lens from up to a mile away. … “Partridge Family” star Suzanne Crough, 52, who played youngest daughter Tracy, died suddenly at her Nevada home on Monday.
