TLC turns to Kickstarter to fund last album

In 1999, girl group TLC famously warned away guys who “wanna get with me with no money” in the platinum single “No Scrubs.”

In 2015, however, T-Boz and Chilli want to assure fans they are no scrubs as they turn to Kickstarter to fund their fifth and final album.

“People may say, 'Hey, you are celebrities. Why can't you just pay for it yourself?'” Chilli, aka Rozanda Thomas, told The Associated Press. “But it doesn't work that way. There's a lot that goes into it. We want to bring our fans into the process and see how it's done.”

T-Boz, aka Tionne Watkins, and Chilli launched the campaign Monday and are seeking $150,000 for studio time, musicians' pay and album promotion. The campaign, which had raised more than $34,000 by Monday evening, promises donors perks such as digital downloads ($15) or slumber parties with Chilli or T-Boz ($5,000).

The band's last album, “3D,” was released in 2002 shortly after the death of bandmate Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in a car accident at age 30.

Director Clint Eastwood's “American Sniper” set a record over the weekend with a $105.3 million haul.

Bradley Cooper stars in the Iraq War film, which broke a record for the biggest January film opening, previously held by “Avatar.” The film was also nominated for six Academy Awards, including nods for best picture and best actor.

But not everyone was a fan of the film, a biopic of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who was killed in Texas in 2013.

“American Sniper kind of reminds me of the movie that's showing in the third act of Inglorious Basterds,” tweeted “The Interview” star Seth Rogen, referring to the propaganda-film-within-a-film in which a Nazi sniper guns down Allied troops.
