‘Snapshots’ opens TheatreWorks’ 39th season

TheatreWorks, these days known for bringing new musicals to the stage, has opened its 39th season with “Snapshots” featuring a score by Stephen Schwartz. Part revue, part comedy and part drama, this “musical scrapbook” chronicles a marriage, between Sue and Dan, that has lost its way — only to discover its depth in the passages of the past.

The show premiered at Village Theatre in Seattle in 2005. This revised production, directed by Artistic Director Robert Kelley — who was assisted by Schwartz and book writer David Stern — stars Beth DeVries, who reprises the role of Sue. Broadway actor Ray Wills plays Dan.

What’s unusual about “Snapshots” is the origin of its music. Some of the tunes are newly written by Schwartz; others are hits from his big shows: “Popular” from “Wicked,” “Corner of the Sky” from “Pippin,” and “All Good Gifts” from “Godspell.”

Performances, which run through July 13, are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sundaysat 2 and 7 p.m. at the Center for Performing Arts, 500 Castro St., Mountain View. Call (650) 903-6000.
