The San Francisco Opera Digital Cinema Series, which couldn’t find a theater chain that would carry it in The City, has just found a home at proud old independent Castro Theatre.
The schedule, so far:
» Puccini’s “La Rondine” screens March 17. Acclaimed soprano Angela Gheorghiu stars as Magda de Civry in the rarely-performed opera, an in this Italian take on Viennese operetta. Tenor Misha Didyk is the naive young man who falls in love with the worldly Magda.
» Saint-Saëns “Samson and Delilah” screens March 31. The biblical epic stars mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina as Delilah and tenor Clifton Forbis as the Old Testament hero who loses his heart, his hair and finally his strength.
» Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” screens April 14. Mariusz Kwiecien sings the title role in Mozart’s Don Juan. With Elza van den Heever, Twyla Robinson, Claudia Mahnke, Charles Castronovo, Oren Gradus, Kristinn Sigmundsson and Luca Pisaroni.
» Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” screens April 21. Patricia Racette appears in her signature role as the tragic heroine Cio-Cio-San, opposite young tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton.
