S.F. Ballet ‘Nutcracker’ goes global

The San Francisco Ballet, America’s oldest ballet company celebrating its 75th birthday, is about to become the country’s first to show a filmed production of its “Nutcracker” in movie theaters in the United States, Canada and Europe, according to an official announcement Tuesday.

It’s the latest entry in the shrinking world of digital media, in which New York’s Metropolitan Opera simulcasts circle the globe, San Francisco Opera’s “Samson et Delilah” is seen in a ballpark and filmed La Scala performances can be watched in Napa.

Ballet Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson’s production opens in San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House Dec. 13. It will be captured and presented in high-definition and full Surround Sound by Digiscreen Corp. and shown in theaters from Los Angeles to Barcelona starting Dec. 22.

For a list of theaters and show times, visit www.DigiScreen.ca beginning Monday.

“We are thrilled that ‘Nutcracker’ will now be seen by such a wide and diverse national and international audience,” Ballet Executive Director Glenn McCoy said. “As the first American company to perform ‘Nutcracker,’ we are also proud to be the first American ballet company to have this holiday favorite run in theaters worldwide.”
