‘Rent’ due in San Francisco

Anthony Rapp doesn’t hesitate in describing why the hit show “Rent” has become a modern classic.

“The music is incredible and the characters are identifiable and familiar,” he says. “There’s truth in the story — people connect to it.”

But, Rapp says, “It’s hard for me to be totally objective.”

Rapp, of course, created the role of Mark, the filmmaker who narrates the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical about struggling young artists that was written by Jonathan Larson and based on the opera “La Boheme.”

He’ll be in town beginning Tuesday at the Curran Theatre reprising that role in “Rent: The Broadway Tour.”

Joining him are Adam Pascal, the original Roger, and Gwen Stewart, the amazing original soloist in the show’s signature tune “Seasons of Love.”

Not much has changed in the show, which created a stir on Broadway in 1996 and was made into a movie (filmed in San Francisco) that was released in 2005.

Rapp isn’t tired of the show, either. He’s pleased with the solid “best possible” group involved with the current tour, and works through the production’s plentiful physical demands. “It’s such a strong part of me. It feels like I’m at home when I’m in it,” he says.
