Poor Reeve Carney.
No sooner did the guy put his band Carney on hold to star as Peter Parker in Julie Taymor’s sprawling Broadway musical “Spider-Man – Turn Off The Dark” than his carefully-woven web unwound as the show was plagued with so many mishaps that Taymor herself eventually bowed out.
Making things harder: The rest of the group, including his guitarist brother Zane, had signed on as members of the orchestra. But all is not lost! Yesterday, “Rise Above 1” – the aptly-titled first single from the forthcoming “Music From Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark” soundtrack was released, sung by Carney and featuring (you guessed it) U2’s Bono and The Edge. Take that, J. Jonah Jameson!
The web has been re-slung, with U2 composing a new track, and the production reins handed over to Philip William McKinley, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Chase Brook. And the 14 Steve Lillywhite-produced “Soundtrack” cuts are sung by Carney’s Spider-Man/Peter Parker character, as well as Jennifer Damiano (Mary Jane), T.V. Cardio (Arachne) and Patrick Page as the Green Goblin.
Ithits the streets on June 14, the same night the show officially opens at New York’s Foxwoods Theatre. And if Carney doesn’t survive “The Dark”? Hey – at least he’ll have some great stuff to write about for his next group album!
