KT Tunstall encourages fans to play along

Like most artists these days, scrappy Scottish chanteuse KT Tunstall is finding remarkably inventive new methods for promoting her music. Like her recent “Kollaborate With KT” campaign for her new “Tiger Suit.”

Fans around the world were invited — via YouTube — to take her bare-bones vocal for the single “Glamour Puss” and add their own instrumentation. The result — now posted on YouTube’s homepage — features fans playing the song on everything from ukulele to spoons, beer bottles and glockenspiel.

There’s even a Japanese vegetable musician, tootling a flute made from a carrot.

A virtual global band? Why not? Tunstall says.

Ideas like this have occurred to her at the new solar-powered home studio she’s constructed. “And that’s a dream come true,” she says. “I’m very happily married, and we live in an old gamekeeper’s cottage, a 19th century property that looks like a hobbit pyramid. But that had been my dream for years — to have a secluded space where ourselves and other friends could be creative. And also I could just get up in the middle of the night and record a song, and it didn’t have to be because I had an album campaign coming up.”
