Let’s get one thing straight: Brad Pitt did not “slam” his marriage to Jennifer Aniston or call it “pathetic,” despite multiple headlines trending online recently.

Take the New York Post, which led with “Pitt rips Aniston marriage.” Though he does describe the union as unhappy in an upcoming Esquire magazine piece, he’s referring only to himself and what he was going through existentially at the time.

Pitt says he was smoking way too much weed, as referenced in an earlier Parade magazine piece. “I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out,” he says. “It started feeling pathetic.”

Brad does say his marriage had a tiny bit to do with it, since he was “trying to pretend [it] was something that it wasn’t,” but he also said Aniston “is an incredibly giving, loving, and hilarious woman who remains my friend.”
