Harvey Milk joins famed wax figures at Fisherman’s Wharf

Bay Area gay rights hero Harvey Milk, Elton John and Tiger Woods are among the celebrities on view — in wax — at the new Madame Tussauds San Francisco.

On Thursday, Madame Tussauds opened its sixth attraction in the U.S. at Fishermans Wharf in The City, where visitors can view, touch and take their pictures with more than 60 custom-designed sculptures of influentual people from across the world.

A special local section of the museum, the “Spirit of San Francisco” room, allows visitors to experience — or re-live — the social changes that rocked 1967.

A likeness of Martin Luther King Jr., who, at just 5-feet, 7-inches tall, barely clears a podium, surprised some visitors, while pop star Rihanna’s replica shows details of her tattoos and veins. Fashion icon Lady Gaga gave one of her avant garde costumes to the museum to complete the look on her statue.

The creative team from Madame Tussauds, which is based in West London, uses special techniques to make the realistic life portraits. The steps include molding and coloring (with multiple layers of oil paint) followed by hairdressing and styling.FeaturesFisherman's WharfGossipHarvey MilkMadame Tussauds
