Gaming: Mustang car giveaways draw crowds at Red Hawk

Weekend drawings to win a new Ford Mustang convertible auto have proven so popular Red Hawk Casino near Placerville has extended the giveaways until May 29.

“It’s not seasonal,” Mark Ward, sales and promotions manager, said of the crowds at the establishment near Placerville. “We’ve been doing this long enough now, you build traction as you go. We’ve been giving away cars for 3½ months. You start to build a crowd as people see people driving away in new cars.”

Red Hawk has given away five cars in five weekends, including one to a Daly City woman.

“It’s like running a Ford dealership without charging for the vehicles,” Ward said.

In a promotion that ran in February and March, Red Hawk handed out about $500,000 in cash and prizes, including six Mini Cooper automobiles. The Mustangs in the new promotion are valued at about $33,395 each.

A $30,000 custom Harley Davidson motorcycle was won in April by a Sacramento-area man who had elected not to renew his motorcycle license, Ward said. Something the bike winner will now correct.

Red Hawk has also expanded its poker room. Weekday tournaments start at 10 a.m. and the entry fee is $35. And more video poker games have been added.

Participants in the weekend drawings must be members of Red Hawk’s players club. It’s free to join and worth signing up, with a number of benefits.

Club members always get a discount at Red Hawk’s buffet — it’s $9.95 with the card — and the $10 cover charge to the dueling pianos entertainment on Tuesday nights is waived.

The No. 1 reason people join a players club though, is to accrue points that can be converted into slot play.

At Red Hawk, new members get a rebate for 25 percent on their first trip’s play. The rebate, up to $400 in free slot play, can be used on the player’s next trip to Red Hawk.

Bigger crowds have also meant extended hours and changed menus at some of Red Hawk’s restaurants.

The casino’s Koto Grille, newly remodeled with a bigger entertainment area, has a Friday happy hour that runs from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. with $2 tacos, $2 beer and tequila specials.

There are several Mother’s Day restaurant specials this weekend. The best way to see them all is to check the website at www.redhawkcasino.com.

Ditto to find out who is playing at the free concerts from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays at the Stage Bar.
