Friday night tree lightings in Ghirardelli Square, Union Square

Two San Francisco landmark locations officially get the holiday season under way Friday evening with tree-lighting events.

Catch the lighting of the 35-foot tree at 5:30 p.m. in the West Plaza of Ghirardelli Square, at 900 North Point St. Festivities also include musical entertainment, entertainment for kids, a visit from Santa Claus and Ghirardelli hot chocolate. Call (415) 775-5500 for information.

At 6 p.m., Macy’s and sponsors including Viz Media host a tree-lighting ceremony in Union Square, Powell and Geary streets. “After Thanksgiving” festivities preceding the event — including a Shonen Jump Naruto tent featuring ninja activities — begin at noon. Visit www.macys.com.
