Engineer offers Christmas trees, decorations online

Blake Slemmer, a homesteader and environmental engineer from Atlanta, helps people pick their own tree and decorations through his website www.pickyourown.org. He started the website six years ago to encourage families to support local farms.

Is there a perfect Christmas tree? If it brings you joy and your kids squeal with delight, that’s all that matters. There is so much of Christmas that is controlled by external conditions; the tree for each family is unique.

Why did you start the website for Christmas trees? It’s a way for farmers to advertise where they are and for consumers to review them.

When you find your tree, where is the best place to put it? You don’t want to place it too close to walls or heat sources to dry it out. You don’t want it in the way of children or where pets can get into it.

Why do most families put it in front of a window? When you come home on a cold winter night and you see the tree all bright and lit up, it’s very warming.

What are the best lights for the tree? I think LED-based lights are more environmentally safe because they use a fraction of the energy, and they don’t overheat the wire as easily as large bulbs do, creating a fire hazard.
