Did Lohan quit film, or was she canned?

Did Lindsay Lohan lose her latest film role, or did she walk away from it herself?

The actress’s rep told TMZ that she opted to back out of playing adult star Linda Lovelace in the biopic “Inferno” because she is “concentrating on her recovery” at the Betty Ford Center, and the decision was “mutual.”

The edgy material may have been a factor.

“Lindsay has realized that in order to get her life and career back on track, she has to be very selective with her projects,” a source told Radar Online. “She wants to pursue projects like the ones that made her successful. She also realizes that she doesn’t need to identify with roles that relate to issues she dealt with. Everyone on her treatment team has stressed that.”

But the film’s director said she was fired.

“We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan,” Matthew Wilder told E! “Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her — and some other issues — have made it impossible for us to go forward.”

“Watchmen” starlet Malin Akerman has already replaced LiLo.

Mail scare

We knew Bristol Palin’s improbably successful stint on “Dancing With the Stars” was controversial, but we never thought the FBI would have to become involved. Yet the bureau was indeed called in when a mysterious white powder was sent to the set in an envelope — which, according to TMZ sources, was addressed to the 20-year-old.

The FBI told TMZ that its hazmat team, along with the LAPD, “responded to a report of a threatening letter containing white powder.” After testing, the substance turned out to be talcum.

Following the incident, “measures were taken to secure the area and ensure the safety of personnel,” an ABC rep said.

Pizza party

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson celebrated their engagement with a party at her parents’ California spread Thursday. Surrounded by well-wishers, including Jess’ younger sister Ashlee and hubby Pete Wentz, the couple noshed on pizza and casual finger foods, and “looked so happy,” an insider told Life & Style magazine.

However, the singer seems to have some bling anxiety, as she allegedly kept fishing for compliments on her ruby engagement ring.

“At one point, she asked one of the servers what she thought of the ring,” a source said. “When the server said it was beautiful, Jessica snapped, ‘You don’t mean that!’”

OK, that is a little weird.

Amber: denial

Amber Portwood has been charged with two felonies for allegedly assaulting her baby daddy, Gary Shirley, in front of their toddler daughter, Leah. But although the incident was caught on camera for “Teen Mom,” the reality TV star bizarrely insisted it never happened.

“I didn’t hit Gary in front of Leah, so there are no felony charges,” Amber told the Hollywood Life website. “None of this is true, there’s nothing against me. They can’t charge me if they don’t have proof.”

The police news release said the incidents were caught on tape, and both Amber and Gary gave statements confirming they occurred.

So … what is up with the denial here?
