Moyer is the founder and executive director of Volunteers for Outdoor California, an organization that provides a volunteer workforce for large-scale trail maintenance and construction projects, habitat restoration, and related land stewardship activities on public lands in partnership with public agencies and other nonprofit organizations. What are your goals with the organization?
Fundamentally, our broad goal is to enable people to engage in outdoor stewardship in a really fun way. If people have a better understanding of how much effort goes into trail maintenance, they are more likely to be appreciative of these lands.
What motivates you to run it?
I wanted to make a large-scale impact and build something that enabled people to run their own projects.
What’s next for volunteers:
- n Trail building in Golden Gate Park, plus overnight camping. (today to Sunday)
- n Half-day projects with the East Bay Regional Park District to work on trail building and habitat restoration. (Aug. 25-Sept. 22)
- n East Bay Hills Hike and Ride, a five-day hiking and horseback-riding trip. (Aug. 29-Sept. 3)
- n Building new trails and repairing old ones at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. (Sept. 7-9)
