SF’s top prosecutor promises Muslim community protection from hate crimes

San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon expressed on Friday The City’s solidarity and protection of the Muslim community after a noontime prayer service at Islamic Society of San Francisco.
.
Gascon pledged to follow up on any incident of a reported hate crime that takes place in The City. The some 200 people in attendance applauded his remarks.

“In the city of San Francisco, there is no tolerance of hate and there is absolutely no tolerance for racism,” Gascon said at the mosque, located at 20 Jones St. “There is no tolerance for going after people because of their religious beliefs.”

He announced that The City’s 24 hour, multilingual, non-emergency hate crime hotline has recently been updated to include Arabic. Gascon warned that while the hotline operators may ask for some identifying information, the informant’s immigration status is irrelevant and would not be shared. The hotline center can be reached at 415-551-9595.

Gascon cited a recently released Department of Justice report statistic showing a 67 percent rise in hate crimes across the U.S. He has instructed The San Francisco Police Department to increase their vigilance to fight against any incidents of a reported hate crime.

“We believe that an assault on one us is an assault on every one of us,” Gascon said. “We believe we must stand united in unity regardless of our color, regardless of national origin, or sexual orientation or religion or we will all fall together.”

Gascon spoke at the communities’ noon prayer service where about 450 men and 25 women were in attendance, of which approximately 200 stayed after service to listen to his message.
