San Francisco city attorney sues health insurers

City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced Wednesday he is suing three health insurers for a “scheme” to underpay San Francisco General Hospital and other public hospitals in the state for emergency services.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges Blue Cross of California, Anthem Blue Cross Life and Health Insurance Co., and Health Net have not reimbursed the hospital fully for treatment of patients covered by those insurers.

“The insurers we’ve sued are shortchanging public hospitals, and sticking taxpayers with the bill,” Herrera said in a statement.

He’s looking to stop the practice and recover the money he says the hospital is entitled to.
